Driving Tips During the Holiday Season

Winterize

The holiday season brings family gatherings and work parties, but also it brings below-freezing weather, winter coats, and even snow and ice.

Distracted Driving

  • Do not drive when you are impaired – either by drugs or alcohol. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, or ride-share service to protect yourself and others on the road.
  • Avoid distractions. Have you ever driven an entire length of a football field with your eyes closed? That’s what happens when you decide to check an email or scroll through your social media account or read text messages at 55mph for 5 seconds. Safe driving requires your full attention.
  • Check weather conditions – or check the local traffic report. If the weather is bad, or there are pile-ups on the freeway, maybe you should hold off on going anywhere for a while.

About The Children

  • Make sure your children have age and size-appropriate seat belts or car seats. Learn how to properly buckle children in, and avoid the most common mistakes.
  • Bulky coats shouldn’t be used underneath a car harness. It makes it difficult to tighten the car seat harness properly. First load the child into the car seat, then place a blanket or coat over the buckled child.
  • Remember that children aged 12 and younger should be properly buckled in the back seat of a vehicle.

Older Drivers

  • Make sure you have a good emergency kit in the trunk of your vehicle.
  • Older drivers need to have their eyes checked on a regular basis to make sure their eyesight is still within the range of driving.
  • Plan your travels to drive only in the daytime – when daylight is better if you are over age 60 if you are able to. Choose well-lit roads, if you need to drive at night.
  • Don’t forget to winterize your vehicle.
